Land Transport (Drug Driving) Amendment Bill Submission - April 2021

Executive Summary

The Safety Collective commends the government’s commitment to enhancing the testing of drug driving to improve road safety, given the impact of alcohol and other drug related deaths and serious injuries (DSIs) occurring on New Zealand roads.

We highlight the need to provide adequate resources to operationalise the drug drive testing regime, using the example of reduced alcohol testing to illuminate why this is imperative.

Alcohol and other drugs are a serious issue on our waterways also, and we need a comprehensive approach to addressing this harm.

We strongly recommend that government commits to providing adequate and on-going resourcing to ensure the effectiveness of the legislation is upheld.
